St Augustine

Often overlooked for the cheap glitz of Miami or the sunny beach stretches of Daytona, St. Augustine, situated along Florida’s northeastern coast, nevertheless is a sophisticated tourist destination with a history steeped in Spanish Colonial heritage as well as 19th century architecture.

In fact, it is the oldest European settlement on the North American Continent, settled 21 years before the English settlement of Roanoke, but it wasn’t until the latter half of the 19th century that St. Augustine became a winter resort for wealthy Northeasterners.

Today, St. Augustine is rife with golf courses, including the St. Augustine Golf Club near the old Castillo de San Marcos fortress. There is also yacht racing, overseen by the St. Augustine Yacht Club.

And of course, who can forget the several beaches the city has to offer? Five, to be exact: St. Augustine Beach, Crescent Beach, Vilano Beach, North Beach, and South Ponte Vedra Beach. Barrier islands create a natural protective waterway for St. Augustine’s coast.
