South AmericaDestinations in South America
Situated in the lower western hemisphere, South America is the fourth largest continent on the planet and holds some of the most picturesque scenery not found anywhere else, from the geologically young Andes Mountains to the Amazon Rainforest and corresponding River, its mixture of Spanish, Portuguese, French and indigenous cultures, South America is a continent with its own distinct flavor and feel.
Spanning a good chunk of South America is Brazil, some 8.5 million square kilometers, the most visited country on the continent and it’s easy to see why. From its grand, fun-loving capital city of Rio de Janeiro to the barely contained Amazon basin, six million square kilometers of jungle and rivers, Brazil has all the exotic visual imagery that visitors picture when they think of the country.
The Andes Mountains run along the western corridor of the continent about 4400 miles long. Young and volatile, the mountains come in everything from snow-capped peaks and glaciers to active volcanoes.
South America is filled with much of the world’s wildest and unexplored beauty. While it may not necessarily be your number one destination spot in mind when scheduling your next vacation, it is truly a place to consider setting foot upon at some point in your life.
