Central America

Destinations in Central America

Squeezed between Mexico and South America, Central America has developed its own unique identity and culture, enough to be distinguished from its northern and southern neighbors.

The region typically includes all the countries between Mexico and Columbia, some 208,500 square miles of landmass with countries like Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Panama.

While significantly the poorest region in the Western Hemisphere, one can’t deny that Central America contains its own beauty and soul. Costa Rica is a dazzling vacationer’s paradise with breathtaking beaches and lush rainforests.

Central America’s extensive coastlines of the Pacific Ocean and Caribbean Sea give it sprawling white sand beaches, clear blue waters, and many, many beachgoers. Inland, jungles coat the lands and the terrain is a bit more mountainous, making hiking forays quite popular.

And while the beach is all fun and good, don’t forget that Central America is bursting with cultural flavor, a barrage mixture of indigenous and Spanish flair, including the ancient Mayan and Aztec civilizations. Its agriculturally-based economies dot the landscapes with fields of cash crops like bananas, coffee, and tobacco.

It’s a step off the beaten paths of the usual tourist hotspots, but Central America can be an interesting and exciting alternative for those who seek to go against the flow.
